Writers Workshop, assignment 1

I’m currently working on assignment two, but thought I’d post assignment one. When I figure out how to go back to the old assignments I’ll save the instructors comments for the re-write. Until then, this is what I submitted, unaltered, unedited, raw so to speak.

1. "ugly" image

She’s got dirt in places no one wants dirt. From beneath the the second skin of grime shines bright eyes, one blue, one green. Alight with the glow that children have regardless of their position in society. Her proud strut from the Wal-Mart to the apartment complex that has been her home for the last two years, has the air of someone above it all. Above worldy concerns, above “where will the next rent check come from”.

2. write a descriptive passage derived from a list of items associated with your vocation or avocation

The desk is wood, fastened to the walls of the room in such a way that it seems to hang straight out from the walls. The laptop sits off to the left of my corner of the room. Waiting for me, waiting to come to life and bring to life the two LCD monitors to it’s right. Their power LEDs blink haphazardly; first one then the other, waiting for their cue from the laptop that they are needed. One either side darkened monitors sit coffee cups and handcrafted ceramic cups. Each holding it’s designated contents, highlighters in one, in the large ceramic cup next to the highlighters are the scissors and pens. Opposite these are the paint pens and drafting pencil, in their NASA mug of unknown origin. Just out of arms reach to the far right at the end of the magically suspended desk, a small laser printer makes almost inaudible sounds to itself. Patiently waiting for the next google map, or word document it’s given.

3. person—real or fictional—in action.

His legs pump in a steady cadence. Each shoe thundering to the gravel. The route requires no thought, no planning. His legs know exactly what to do, what is required of them, they’ve done this before, they could probably do it without his being awake. They’ve been released from their standstill state and aren’t yet ready to return to it. His arms piston in time with his legs; left leg, right arm, right leg, left arm. The set of his face, eyes forward, almost completely shut, squinting against a glare that isn’t there. Affording the wind little opportunity to blur his vision. He controls his breathing expertly, measured inhales and exhales to maximize his oxygen consumption. As he rounds the bend, he leans into it, his legs adjust to the minor change in their trajectory. Slowly, only barely enough to round the bend without sending him sailing off into the rose bushes a few yards off the track. He’s on the straightaway again, his legs have returned to their previous pace, the thunder of is feet on the ground has resumed. This is the last stretch. He leans into his run even more, his upper body angled out over his stride. Each foot leaves the ground almost the same instant it touches it.

my MVC experiences

I’ve been onsite for a week now at my new Client. I really dig the folks there. Very cool peeps. I’m a bit nervous about my lack of MVC experience. They’ve adopted a model of MVC-2, and I’ve only started playing with ModeGlue an itty bitty bit. It doesn’t help that one of the developers there that is leading the project I’m on has a thing for abstracting for the sake of abstracting. So it’s just that much more for my braing to wrap around. It’s all good though. I figure if I can succeed with this architecture, I’ll be good with just about anything I come across.

I’ll probably need to spend some time with him on Monday to really solidify my understanding of his though process and how I should be going forward. Somehow I ended up with the thing I’m least skilled at. The View. UI isn’t even my forte, go figure. On top of that I think I probably have one of the tougher parts, view wise. Oh well that’s how it goes.

Timing in life is funny. I no sooner sign up for an online writing course than I take on a new client and am onsite all week in downtown. I haven’t down this sessions’ reading and have until wednesday to do my assignments. Plus I haven’t kept up with the dritics corner. ARGH.

On top of that I have a project I’m wrapping with another client. Spec? what spec? "It’s pretty standard that a developer write an app from a screen shot." I’ll be so glad when this project is over.

Skyping CF’ers come together

As if the community needed to be even more interconnected….

Stephen Collins had a cool idea. Compile a list of ColdFusion developers that are using skype. I saw it on Sean Corfields blog. I posted my userID hope others do too.
