I have never preferred a supercompact laptop from any vendor. There are just too many tradeoffs. And I speak from experience because I had a buyer that absolutely insisted I needed a (PC) tablet and paid the extra to get it for me, and I hated it. It's little, yes. And it's limited, definitely.

For a true road warrior I can see how the size and weight would be attractive. But *most* true road warriors are salespeople and their ilk, and they don't need much in the way of advanced applications in general.

I travel, but not enough for it to matter. I will continue to haul my MBP "brick" from place to place, until it's time for the next machine. Then I will get another standard-size laptop.

@Michael,

Yes I did, however I have been known to watch a movie, obviously wifi would be off, though not if I fly (is it?) United in a few months, who will offer in flight wifi. Also, an earlier point still stands, even if I went to extrems to squeeze extra time out of the battery and got Apple's 5 hours... that's not a flight to Europe even. Barely a flight across the US. It makes sense to you to have to miser your power usage when carrying a second battery is an option... except that it's not.

As I said, I have an MCE Optibay in my MacBook Pro. I have two HDDs. no SLot load.

I can't imagine, actually. That's retarded. It's retarded from any angle other than "Screw our customers" YOu'd have no problem if your TV was 8 prong? not working in any house int he US? You'd be ok if your car only ran on 94 octane, available at very few stations any more?

Seems to me that they are not pigeon holing in a negative way. Their goal seems singular-make it as light and thin as possible. If you want all the things they took out then you want a MB or MBP. This is a sub-notebook-it's very specific for it's use and type of user. Plus apple is fully focused on as much wireless connections as possible. I've had a MBP for a year and i'm trying to think if i used it other than to install leopard. A 2 gig usb thumb drive seems like a much better way to move stuff around than a disc.

so I guess the niche also includes being connected to wifi and nothing else.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/24/adding-insult-to-injury-usb-3g-modems-wont-fit-in-the-macbo/

sure you could get a small USB extension. You'll have room in your bag where the extra battery used to be. :)

You did notice, of course, that it got three hours and twenty minutes when Mossberg disabled "all power-saving features, set the screen brightness at maximum, turn on the Wi-Fi and" played an endless loop of music? Something you're likely to do on that airplane?

Me, I typically enable power-saving features, turn off wifi, cut the screen brightness down a bit, and usually listen to music or an audiobook on my iPod or iPhone. You know, like make a little effort to make the battery last a teensy-weensy bit longer?

Secondarily, which MacBook or mini or iMac or Mac Pro do you own currently? That doesn't have it's own SuperDrive? And where not being able to add a second drive to them is a deal-breaker?

I have an external CD-RW/DVD drive for a Dell C400 and it has a custom connector. I mean, the gall of Dell to make a drive I can't use with anything else.

Can you imagine?

So how many true road warriors don't have a spare battery? everyone I've met swears by having at least one. "just in case"

I don't think it won't sell, I think it would sell more with 1-2 less "compromises"

All other "cons" aside, i'd buy one right now if I could swap out the battery whenever I wanted.
