My guess is that the port was blocked for Bonjour. I had to create an ad hoc wireless network on the MBA and join my iPhone to it. Definitely less than ideal. Found that out after I bought it, and asked wooji what was up. Not sure if Bonjour's port is commonly blocked or not. hoping not! @Tony,

I don't know about blocked ports in the wild, but hopefully for iPhone users, it's not often -- Apple don't let third-party developers use iTunes sync except for pure backup, so pretty much every iPhone app that wants to do desktop syncing, uses Bonjour to locate the services.
