O’Reilly first victim of the economy?

iPhoneLive might be the first event to fall victim of our troubled economy. They announced that the first iPhone Developer conference, has been postponed.

We’re sorry to announce that we’ve made the difficult business decision to postpone the O’Reilly iPhoneLive conference, which was to take place November 18 in San Jose.

We are grateful for the support of those who had agreed to participate in the event, particularly program co-chairs Raven Zachary and Bill Dudney, and sponsor Catapulley.

O’Reilly will continue to explore the mobile space, including the possibility for a future version of the conference.

I can’t say I’m super surprised. IIRC it wasn’t a very low cost event, couple that with the economy, and well…

Maybe Tom and I can do something about the lack of an iPhone developer conference ;)

Please Fix the iPhone

This is awesome. It’s the iPhone version of that Adobe site where everyone posts their gripes about Adobe’s products. I can’t for the life of me remember the URL!!!

I posted one about not being able to click a phone number in a calendar entry. I hate that! I have a lot of conference calls, and have to write my bridge number down so I can dial it manually. My blackberry I could just go to the reminder, click the dial in number, and bam. If formatted like Number X conf code, it would dial the number, pause, then my code so I never had to know any of the numbers. GRRRR

At any rate, take a look. There’s some serious gems, like the Email app supporting iPhone rotation (duh), cut/paste, stuff like that. Of course there’s plenty of noise in there too, but that’s to be expected, there’s no barriers to submitting a wish.

The American CTO. Not the Technology Czar?

saw this on techcrunch. Business week is talking about soon to be President Obama’s plan to create a cabinet level post of CTO, and who the front runners are for the job.

The top names according to BW are:

Vint Cerf – Cheif Internet Evangelist for Google. I’m not sure I want some one from Google in that position. Google’s great and all “Do no evil” but I’m getting less and less convinced as time goes by that their motives are so altruistic.

Steve Balmer – uh no. Maybe CCO; Chief Crazy Officer, but CTO? Sorry Steve, you seem smart and all but I wouldn’t put in in front of a crowd of anyone. Microsoft fanboys seem to like you, but from the outside looking in, you seem a bit crazy, and not really in touch with technology that doesn’t come from Redmond.

Jeff Bezos – CEO of Amazon. I’d buy that for a dollar. I’ve never met Jeff, but from everything I’ve read about him, he’s down to earth, cool, and generally a fun guy, with a good head for business.

Ed Felton – Comp Sci professor from Princeton. I don’t know a single thing about him, but A Princeton Prof, can’t be too bad a choice.

Lawrence Lessig – I’d buy that for a buck too. I read his blog (when it’s not over my head) he seems to be spot on with technology, and politics, which seems to be sorely lacking in Washington, just look at most of our existing tech legislation, and oh god, the Patent and Copyright office.

Techrunch has a poll, so go take a look, and drop your opinion.

Brightkite connects your iPhone with… everyone

I’ve been on the Brightkite iPhone app beta for a while now, and I gotta say it’s a damn cool app. Adam Flater introduced me to brightkite…. sheesh, a while ago. Since then I’ve met the team a few times and really enjoyed talking to them.

It’s finally available in the App Store. I’d paste the app store link but the store seems to be having some troubles. I was hoping to be the first to review it too, foiled!

If you need an invite let me know, I’ve got some.

The application makes checking in, posting notes and photos a breeze. The location aware services, even on a G1 iPhone, kick butt, they’re very accurate. I’ve heard that the 3G stuff is just plain awesome!

It’s also kinda cool that Brightkite is right up the street from me, that’s kinda neat to have such a cool start up so close. I still need to see the office, but will one of these days.

if you’re into location aware services, Brightkite is the app for you. There’s plenty of other apps, Loopt (i’ve used) is ok, but not the same. Brightkite is more like twitter, in that the community that has formed around is pretty tight and very friendly.

Check it out. Who knows, maybe Britney will join us and we can all see where she checks in (scary thought)
