Time Machine

Time Machine almost wiped out my past

I like Time Machine, it has it’s faults; like not being able to define my own intervals, being kinda slow over the network, creating sparse images on network back up, but actual folder structures over USB, but in general it’s nice, and it’s built in, which I like. I had carbonite for my PCS and was trying the Mozy betas, which I might still use (I’m still paying for it) so that I have offsite recovery, but built in is nice.

However, I found out the painful way that it’s a picky little bastard, and not really friendly to being interrupted. I’ve been successfully backing up to my 250gb drive, on my Airport BaseStation since April I think. At some point the day before yesterday, Time Machine got harassed, and decided to throw a tantrum. The Sparse Image it created of my MBP was corrupt and unusable. I found a few blog posts that were sorta helpful, but not 100%. Most were “I tried a bunch of things, and some failed, some worked, and then poof, the image wasn’t corrupt” great.

MacOSXhints.com had a great starting point, and good comments. I was hopefull that I’d be one of the lucky, “poof it worked” folks, but alas, I wasn’t. A few comments mentioned Disck Warrior. Reluctantly, I purchased. 100 bones is a bit steap, IMO and they don’t offer a DL only option. So I guess a CD is coming my way, on top of the Download link I got in email. Whatever.

It worked! I found a butt load of errors (image) but when all was said and done, i had my history. I was tempted to just start over, but I’ve had to dip into the history once or twice to get things I thought I didn’t need, but did, so loosing it all wasn’t really appealing.

So word to the wise, tread lightly when Time Machine is making it’s hourly productivity sacrifice. I know I will be now.

Time Machine over the network no love

I have a Seagate 250GB drive that I was using for Time Machine. Locally it was great Then Apple updated the AIR port base station. SWEET.

I’ve got two macs, a MBP and a MBA. The MBA uses a smaller 40gb drive hung off the Airport station, and backs up like a champ. I’ve got history back several weeks at any given time.

The MacBook Pro however has had zero luck! First I wasn’t able to get the initial 126gb back up to complete. I read an article about starting the back up on the network, then completing it over USB to speed it up. Then reconnect to the network for all future backing up. NO LUCK.

Then I gave it a night to do a full back up over the wire, this morning it looked good. A few smaller back ups took place through out the morning.

I enter time machine, and all that is there is “now” no other days or anything. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. The MBA runs hourly, does it’s thing and is done, but the MBP just won’t get a good back up going. I’d rather not have to always think about ejecting a USB ext disk but may have to. WEAK
