Nicole and I went to Film On The Rocks the other night to see Ghostbusters. It was my last time.
I love the idea, I love the venue, I hate the execution.
The door’s open at 6:30pm, folks trickle in for the next 3 hours. There’s a band or two that plays during that time.
Then the Emcee, Chuck Roy yaks for a while, actually a long while, and that’s my problem with it. The time waste before showing the movie.
First we have to hear from the plethora of boring sponsors, who want to talk to a crowd who couldn’t care less what they have to say. Then Chuck yaks more, then another comedian comes out and does a bit. Last time it was funny, the time before that, was terrible.
Southwest, likes to fuck with people, by doing a stupid drawing with peanuts. I say ‘fuck with people’ because they do this raffle where you use the spotty cellular service internet to fill out a web form (not optimized for mobile), whos url is on the bags of peanuts you get when you enter Red Rocks. They then call a winner and an alternate winner. If the winner doesn’t show up the alternate wins, if they do though, the alternate left their seat, made it down to the stage, just to be told “Too bad, so sad.”
Then Xbox does a give away, then more people yak, etc, usually the same people that yakked earlier in the evening.
The movie doesn’t start until close to 9:30. Mind you it’s now been dark at least 30 minutes, and ‘dark enough’ to start the movie for an hour.
There’s so much wasted time just for sponsors and time wasting, that it’s not a very fun experience. Sure I’m being a fuddy duddy, but I just don’t like wasting so much time for nothing more than lip service from people who paid to talk to a captive audience. There’s so much better ways to reach out to so many people, than wasting your breath and our time. We came to a movie to see a movie, not hear about Denver Public Schools, the Cancer this, Southwest that, Xbix, blah blah blah blah.
So, sadly we’re done with Film on the Rocks. They’ve ruined the fun by crowding more and more people into the venue, so even the hang out with friends and enjoy the dead time vibe is gone. Now it’s sit uncomfortably, be harassed about taking up too much room, urged to “Move to the middle” then watch a movie over the noise of the crowd.
