A follow up on Trying New Things

So I wrote earlier about my experiments in going wide/leaving KDP Select albeit briefly. I wanted to follow up on that, as it’s only now that things are starting to return to “normal”. Normal being what I was seeing before my last term with KDP Select ended.

Sales Activity

This is my overall sales rank graph. I extended the timeline to “All time” because well the choices are 30 days, or “all time” LOL. You can see that prior to departing KDP Select things were chugging along. I was keeping an average ranking in the low 20 thousands.

Since I was struggling to reclaim ground even almost a month later, I decided to try two things to see if I could get a boost. I ran a Reign of Reads promotion tied to a free book day (remember in KDP Select you get 5 of them). I hit sales rank 146 in free books. The days after saw my sales rank climb a bit. The second was less planned. I realized folks would be getting Kindles for Christmas so figured, ‘hey why not’ and made Christmas Day be another free day. This one wasn’t advertised, at all. So it was far less impactful than the previous one. I hit sales rank 1198. (You can see how many actual copies moved below)

Units Orders

The email blast (which makes sense) was pretty effective. Over one thousand copies. There’s no hard value here, other than I’m hoping some of those folks read and review (and like it enough for 4-5 stars) the book. Maybe some will join my email newsletter. Also hopefully, as people grab ‘Space Rogues‘ they grabbed other titles, maybe better-ranked ones, helping me show up in their “Also Bought” views, which can be a boon for sales.

As you can also see, it’s been pretty slow coming out of Christmas (probably normal, I’ll know next year, LOL) on the sales side, but things are starting to pick up.

Kindle Unlimited Page Reads

KU page reads

My Kindle Unlimited numbers are a bit different. I’m not sure how Amazon shows things, but I’m guessing it took a while once I re-upped for for Kindle Unlimited for ‘Space Rogues‘ to actually show up enough to get noticed. By Christmas, my page reads were starting to look normal again. A few hiccups around new-years (No idea) but otherwise back to where they were around early November. Earlier this week seeing one of the biggest spikes since nearly the same time a month prior. Hopefully, this sees the KU page reads continue to increase.

More on this later, but for now, I’m committed to KDP Select/Kindle Unlimited (as a reader it’s 100% great, go sign up!), so I’m hoping to see this area grow for me. While I think it was neat to venture away from KDP Select, for now, especially with only one book in the market, it’s worth being here.

Though I certainly hope actual sales grows also (actually more, go buy ‘Space Rogues‘ now!)
